Finger Foods

Finger Toast

Toast is a great finger food for kids. Cut it long-ways to make long toast sticks that are easy for little fingers to pick up. Here are some topping ideas:

Cheezy Fingers
Toast both sides of bread then sprinkle with chedder cheese and broil until the cheese has melted. Slice into toast fingers.

No-Egg Omlett Fingers
Mix chopped tomato, grated cheese and finely chopped lunch meat (ham or turkey). Spread over toast and broil until cheese melts. Slice into toast fingers.

Guac Fingers
Mash up an avacodo and spread over toast, cover with shredded cheese and broil until cheese is melted. Slice into toast fingers.

Mex Fingers
Spread mashed beans over toast and cover with shredded cheese. Boil until cheese melts. Slice into toast fingers.

Cinnamon Toast
Spread butter on toast and sprinkle cinnamon sugar... lightly toast/broil for a yummy sweet treat!

Dipping Fun

Toddlers love to dip pretty much anything into some sort of sauce... Check out these ideas for alternatives to the standard ketchup!

Yummy Yogurt
Add diced cucumber to plain yogurt... a dash of salt an pepper to taste. Perfect for dipping veggie (cucumber, carrots, bell pepper, brocolli, celery) sticks

Fruity Yogurt
Buy fruit yogurt or make your own by adding fruit or preserves to plain yogurt. Serve with bite size fruit pieces (melon, berries, orange, mango, kiwi) and toothpicks.

Avacado Dip
Mash half an avacado. Add grated cheese and a small diced tomato. Serve with cut up veggies (cucumber, carrots, bell pepper, brocolli, celery) or toast to dip.

Just Plane Fun

It's alright to have the occasional 'fun' snack - even if it isn't the most nutricious...

Candy Sushi
This would be fun to include in a bag lunch or let the kids help make it! I don't remember where I saw it - but, this is a huge hit with my sushi lovin' kids.
What You Need:
- square fruit roll-up
- rice crispy treats
- red vines
open the fruit roll-up and spread a line of rice crispy treat across one edge. Lay a red vine on top of the rice crispy treat. Roll the fruit roll up around the rice crispy treat and red vine like a burrito. Slice like sushi and enjoy!

Little Tips
Never give young toddlers hard fruit or veggies such as apples or carrots. Pieces can break off and create a choking hazard. Grate or cook (to soften) the fruit or vegetable as an alternative.

Little Tips
Preschoolers love eating off a stick. Buy some popcycle sticks at the craft store and get creative... add fruit, meatballs or veggies and serve for a fun meal or snack.
